The fourteenth amendment (amendment xiv) to the
united states constitution was adopted on july 9, 1868, as one of the
reconstruction amendments. The amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal
protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues related to
former slaves following the american civil war. Blacks were officially equal to whites but were still separated.
It gave immigrants and african american citizenship so they can have equal rights like the rest. The 14th amendment also gave congress the power of enforce amendments. States can't enforce a law that discriminates against a minority race. This law give the even rights to all that were born in the united states which was passed by the Republican Party.
